From 10K to half marathon: Olivia’s story

Olivia Van Hove has been running for as long as she can remember. Her love for running was passed down from home: every year, she would take part in a charity run alongside her mum. To prepare, her mum used the Start 2 Run app, and Olivia often joined her.

“I really grew up with Start 2 Run. As a child, I ran alongside my mum while she trained with the app. Now, I set my own goals and I’ve just completed my first half marathon.”

Year after year, they ran the charity event together, a tradition that strengthened their bond and nurtured Olivia’s passion for running. But when the final edition took place in 2023, Olivia realised her fitness wasn’t what it once was. It was time to get back on track.

Using Start 2 Run, she began training again with a goal she knew well: running 10K. Thanks to the structured programme, she could train with focus. Twelve weeks later, she ran 10K again, in under an hour, and with pride.

A NEW CHALLENGE

When the charity run was permanently cancelled in 2024, Olivia lost her regular running goal. With a busy schedule as a physiotherapy student, running took a back seat. Until one day she spotted an ad on Facebook for the Ghent Marathon. The half marathon caught her eye as a great, achievable goal.

Olivia decided to go for it again. And just like before, she chose Start 2 Run to guide her.

Training started in the cold January weather, right in the middle of exam season which was not ideal. But running gave her structure, breathing space, and a mental reset.

PUSHING THROUGH EVEN WHEN IT'S TOUGH

The first few weeks were challenging. Sometimes, she had to force herself out the door. But gradually, she felt her body growing stronger.

“My biggest lesson? Your body can do way more than you think, as long as you’re patient and train well.”

On race day, Olivia had one goal: to finish and enjoy the experience. Thanks to the Start 2 Run plan, she felt well prepared. The cheers along the course gave her an extra boost. She crossed the finish line in 2 hours and 2 minutes.

“I’m so proud I made it, at my own pace. Despite the tough moments, I kept going. And that feels amazing.”

THE ROLE OF START 2 RUN

For Olivia, the app was a lifeline during a busy time. The training plans provided structure, and the feedback during runs, pace, distance, time, motivated her to keep going. Start 2 Run became more than just an app; it became a reliable running buddy.

After twelve weeks, she felt stronger than ever, both physically and mentally. What started as running alongside her mum has now become her own journey.

“Running is my way of challenging myself. I feel stronger than ever, also mentally.”

For anyone setting a goal, she recommends taking it smartly:

  • Invest in good running shoes
  • Start slow and build gradually
  • Listen to your body
  • Be patient: it pays off

The half marathon is done and it’s left her hungry for more. A full marathon, perhaps? If that happens, Olivia already knows who will guide her every step of the way.
